Sarah Knows Eyes
When your child starts school you want them to have the best possible start don’t you? New uniform, new shoes, new pencil case, pens and pencils, new school bag…
What a cutie eh?!
But did you ever stop to wonder if your child is seeing as well as he/she possibly can?
If there is an underlying, undiagnosed and/or uncorrected prescription, you child could start to struggle in class, possibly becoming unruly and disruptive as a result, and ultimately falling behind, totally unnecessarily.
Have you noticed any of the following in your child: -
- Does he/she hold things very close to their faces to see them? Or tend to sit very close to the television?
- Are they screwing their eyes up when concentrating on things?
- Are they withdrawn and jumpy?
- When they look at you, does it seem like one of their eyes is looking in a slightly different direction? (Cross-eyed?)
- Does the white of their eyes look nice and bright, clean and white?
- Are both pupils the same size?
- Do their eyes seem to be “shaky”?

…who remembers these? (I must admit it’s a bit before my time!) Although most of these styles would probably be considered “en vogue” now?! Is fashion “cyclical”? Perhaps a blog topic for a whole other day?).

…is something that I firmly believe, in a manner of speaking. Did you know that your eyes can tell us a lot about what’s going on in your body? For instance: -
- Glaucoma
- Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
- High/low blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Diabetes

Then gradually you start to have issues…

Stunning isn’t it?
IF the clouds part for long enough to grant us a peak at the solar eclipse tomorrow morning between 8-10am, please be sure to protect your eyes properly, as such an event can be hugely dangerous to your eyesight!
Did you know that ultraviolet radiation from the sun is so strong that it can actually burn your retinas in mere seconds, causing something known as ‘solar retinopathy’ – permanent damage to your eyes, and even blindness.
You must NEVER look directly at the sun through sunglasses
You must NEVER look directly at the sun through 3D viewing glasses
In fact, the best advice I can give you, is to never look directly at the sun – you only get one pair of eyes, so why take the risk?!
By far, the safest way to view an eclipse is using a pinhole projector, which is super-easy to make and doubles-up as a fun task for little ones, whilst teaching them the importance of looking after their eyes!
